How to choose low-latency peripherals

A guide written in milliseconds and grams: which spec really changes your match, which one is marketing, and in what order to spend your money.

The latency chain, from your finger to the screen

Between deciding to shoot and the shot appearing on screen there's a chain of links: the switch you press, the interval at which the peripheral reports to the PC, the game engine, the GPU, the cable and the monitor panel. Every link adds milliseconds.

Competitive peripherals act on three of those links: the switch (how long it takes to register the press and to stop registering it), polling (how often the PC is told) and the panel (how often a new image is drawn and how long a pixel takes to change). The rest depends on your PC and your connection.

Keyboards: actuation, Rapid Trigger and SOCD

A magnetic or analog optical switch measures the real position of the key, not a contact. That enables three things a mechanical switch can't do: choosing how deep each key activates, resetting it as soon as you start releasing (Rapid Trigger) and assigning different actions depending on how far you press.

There's a fourth feature, opposing-input resolution (SOCD, marketed as Snap Tap or Rapid Tap), which makes the newest key win when you press A while holding D. It's very powerful for direction changes, but check the rules of the competition you play in, because some leagues have restricted it.

What to compare: the actuation range (0.1 mm is the usual minimum), whether Rapid Trigger is adjustable, whether settings live on the keyboard or depend on software, and the keycap material: doubleshot PBT doesn't shine with use, ABS does.

Mice: weight, sensor, switches and polling

The real order of importance is: shape and weight, then switches, then polling, and last the sensor, because any modern sensor far exceeds what a human hand can move. A sensor's 44,000 DPI is a marketing number: nobody competes above 3,200.

The shape has to match your grip. Palm grip wants more volume and support; claw and fingertip work better with flat, light profiles. An excellent mouse in the wrong shape performs worse than an ordinary one in the right shape.

On switches, optical ones avoid the bounce of a metal contact and with it the debounce delay mechanical switches add in software. In practice: fewer milliseconds and no phantom double-clicks as the mouse ages.

Monitors: hertz, response and blur

Refresh rate defines how often you see a new image. The maths is direct: 240 Hz is 4.17 ms per frame; 280 Hz, 3.57 ms; 360 Hz, 2.78 ms. Each step gives diminishing returns, and past 240 Hz the difference is smaller than the variation in your reaction time.

Motion blur has two origins: the pixel being slow to change colour (where OLED is unbeatable at 0.03 ms) and persistence, meaning your eye tracks an object while the pixel stays lit for the whole frame. There's only one effective tool against persistence: backlight strobing, like DyAc 2 on the BenQ Zowie monitors.

And a warning about OLED: static interfaces (HUD, minimap, taskbar) are its weak point. Current models include panel-care features and warranties that cover burn-in, but it's a factor to consider if you leave the PC on the same fixed image for hours.

Headsets: why 2.4 GHz and not Bluetooth

A proprietary 2.4 GHz link uses a dedicated channel with a minimal buffer: the delay is imperceptible. Bluetooth, through its codec and packet handling, adds tens of milliseconds. For listening to music that's fine; for locating footsteps it isn't.

Beyond the connection, what matters in a tactical shooter is that the treble — where footsteps and reloads live — isn't buried under the bass of explosions, and that your microphone is understood first time. A wideband microphone saves repeating calls, and in a tactical shooter that's as valuable as hearing well.

Accessories: skates and mouse pad

This is the best result-per-euro upgrade in the whole setup. Static friction (the force needed to start moving) depends on the contact area: PTFE skates in dot format cut that area and get the mouse moving sooner, which is exactly what micro-adjustments need.

With pads, the choice is between speed and control. Control pads brake at the end of the travel and forgive overshoot; speed pads glide more and demand better braking technique. Hybrids aim for the middle. XL size isn't aesthetics: it lets you play at low DPI moving your arm, which is how you aim precisely.

How to split the budget

If you're starting from zero and have to prioritise: the monitor first, because it decides when you see the enemy; then the mouse and its skates; then the keyboard; and last the headset, unless you play tactical shooters, where it climbs several places.

An unpopular piece of advice: if you already have decent peripherals, changing your pad and skates for about $40 will give you a more noticeable improvement than spending $150 on a new mouse that weighs six grams less.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really feel going from 1000 Hz to 8000 Hz polling?
You can, but far less than the number suggests. At 1000 Hz the peripheral reports every millisecond; at 8000 Hz, every 0.125 ms. What you mainly gain is consistency: less variation between reports and a smoother cursor in fast swipes. If you have to choose between 8 kHz and a keyboard with adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger, take the second.
What exactly is Rapid Trigger and why does it remove input lag?
A classic keyboard resets the key at a fixed point in the travel, so until you release far enough you can't press it again. With Rapid Trigger the keyboard measures the real position of the stem and deactivates the key the instant it starts rising, even by 0.1 mm. It doesn't make the signal travel faster: it removes the time the keyboard spent waiting.
OLED or Fast TN for competing?
An OLED changes state in 0.03 ms and brings contrast that helps you see silhouettes in dark areas. A Fast TN with backlight strobing (DyAc 2 style) keeps a little more clarity in the extreme case of a horizontal spray and usually comes in 1080p, easier to push at high fps. For most players, a 1440p OLED at 240 Hz is the better buy; for the tactical shooter specialist with a tight GPU, a 280 Hz TN still makes sense.
How light is too light for a mouse?
Below 45 grams many players lose consistency: the mouse stops damping the natural tremor of your hand. Between 50 and 65 grams is where nearly the whole professional scene sits. Going lower is a preference, not an automatic upgrade.
Is a magnetic keyboard worth it if I don't play tactical shooters?
For games where you're not constantly chaining direction changes, the competitive advantage is small. What it does bring in any case is being able to adjust each key's actuation and, on analog models, assign different actions based on press depth.
