What really separates these two

The same sound

Both use 53 mm angled dynamic drivers, 64 ohms, memory foam earpads and an aluminium frame. In sound and comfort they are the same headset. Everything that separates them is in how they connect.

Cable against 120 hours

The Cloud III connects over USB or a 3.5 mm jack: it plugs into almost anything, from a console controller to a phone, and there's no battery to worry about. The Cloud III S runs on 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth 5.0, with up to 120 hours of battery and 20 metres of range. Note: at 64 ohms, both want a bit more volume on weak sources.

Microphone and weight

The Cloud III comes with a detachable boom mic with noise cancelling. The III S has a detachable 10 mm boom with an LED mute indicator, very handy for knowing whether people can hear you. The III S weighs 356 g; HyperX doesn't publish the weight of the wired version.

Verdict

If you always play at the same desk, the Cloud III: you don't pay for a battery you won't use. If you move around, play from the couch or can't stand cables, the Cloud III S, with a battery that lasts weeks.
