The effort it takes to start a movement — static friction — grows with the area resting on the pad. Swapping large skates for dots cuts that area, so the mouse breaks away sooner for the same wrist force. You feel it most in micro-adjustments: those one-centimetre movements where a large skate eats half the travel just overcoming inertia.
Because they're modular, you decide how many dots to use and where: four dots give a fast glide, six or more add control and stability. It's tuning your mouse the way you'd tune tyre pressure, and it's impossible with a one-piece skate.
PTFE (the material in Teflon) is the slipperiest and usually the pick for tactical shooters. UHMW-PE glides a little less but lasts longer and does better on glass. Choosing the material is, literally, choosing your braking curve.

The cheapest change with a real effect in a tactical shooter. With less breakaway friction, crosshair micro-adjustments take less force and less tremor, and stopping dead becomes more predictable. Give it a few days of adjustment to the new glide before you judge it.
Long camera swings benefit from a constant glide with no sticky spots. Less critical than in a shooter, but welcome over long sessions thanks to the lower wrist fatigue.
In PvP with lots of fast turns, continuous glide avoids the micro-snags that throw your camera off when you drag the mouse. Watch out with aggressive dragging techniques: dots concentrate wear on less surface.
A cheap, universal upgrade for any mouse, whatever the tier. If your mouse has spent months on worn factory skates, this makes more difference than buying a new mouse.
